The BGD family is sorry to report the death of team pilot Nikolai Klimenko at the 2022 team gathering in Laragne.
On 17th June 2022 at 3pm, Nikolay’s glider suffered a collapse at low level whilst landing at the official landing field at the Laragne campsite.
Emergency services arrived quickly on the scene within around five minutes. After 20 minutes a medical helicopter also arrived with doctors. Unfortunately Nikolay’s condition quickly deteriorated and he was pronounced dead at the scene due to a severe head trauma.
Around 40 pilots were flying at the same time and generally found the conditions good with 10km/h NW wind and moderate thermals in a blue sky. However all pilots were taken by surprise by the conditions close to the ground. The wind was gusting up to 30km/h and it was very turbulent as the landing field is in the lee of trees and the campground. Nikolai was only 10-20m over the ground when his glider suffered a large collapse and he impacted the ground. Nikolay was an experienced paraglider pilot, instructor and tandem pilot from Russia.
All the pilots flying together here are deeply saddened by this news and our thoughts go to Nikolai s family and friends at this difficult time.
