Team pilot Alberto Assouad, and his friends Duilio (Ardux) Macchi and Carlo Vimercati, are back home in Italy after an epic fortnight flying big XCs on their LYNX 2s in the Kerio valley, Kenya.
Conditions were awesome, and while they may not quite have hit the magic 300k this time, their stats are pretty impressive.
All three of them clocked up 60 hours+ airtime in just under 2 weeks, with many flights of 200km+. Alberto’s best flight was 263.83km flown on 31st January. It was a PB. “All three of us flew PBs that day!” he said, with 262.07km for Ardux and 260.84km for Carlo.
Kilima may be a classic big-distance site, but flying here is not for the faint of heart. “Flying in the Kerio Valley is really tough. There are very, very strong thermals and strong winds. Even the soaring part in the morning looks easy on paper but often is very tricky to catch the right line and to pass through the lee sides properly.
“And the way back is especially tricky since you have to navigate an east-facing ridge with often east or northeast wind, but of course the sun in the afternoon is on the west side. Moreover in the savannah we could see huge dust devils everywhere. Really tough place.”
Congratulations to all three pilots!
