Info

With 25 years of competition experience behind him, Bruce understands well the requirements of a good competition wing. The DIVA is the fastest and most advanced paraglider he has ever created. CCC certified, it is constructed from a mix of standard D30 and lightweight 27g Porcher cloths. It benefits from a new minimal-drag line layout, CCB, shark nose, progressive stability and a speed-optimising profile. All that makes the DIVA very competitive yet easy to handle in the air and on the ground, with top safety for its class.

Tech

BGD Feedback

Gliders that talk are safer. Safer gliders make pilots perform better. Better performing pilots fly further. Further flying pilots are happier pilots. BGD Feedback produces happier pilots!

Leading edge mini-ribs

Situated along the leading edge are reinforced mini-ribs, designed to help produce a rock-solid profile while on speed bar.

Maximised unsupported cells

Optimised unsupported cell groups are designed to match the span-wise load distribution influenced by the line layout. Coupled with a strong internal structure, the line layouts that create more span-wise tension can support more unsupported cells. While maintaining a homogenous wing, this helps to minimise line consumption reducing drag thus improving performance.

Integrated Line Layout

The line layout of our gliders is fully integrated into the wing design. Sail and lines are designed together, holistically. The cell widths and the internal straps that transfer the load though the sail are all designed according to the line layout. Even the panel shaping is matched with the line layout through detailed CAD simulation. The result is simple: fewer lines and stronger, faster, safer gliders.

Post C-band

We have added a Post-C band running along the top surface which seamlessly moves down to the bottom surface at the tip, connecting directly to the last line cascade. Instead of putting heavy plastic rods above the C lines we use this band to counter the common flip-up ripple caused when applying a little brake. The problem with paragliders is when a little brake is applied the cupping of the trailing edge creates lift which often buckles the profile near the Cs. We have solved this problem with the Post-C Band, an eloquent, lightweight, clean and volume reducing solution.

Progressive Stability

Using ALULA, BGD gliders are designed to have a stable and solid centre with progressively softer tips. This teaches pilots to predict and avoid deflations and stay aware of the air.

Snap Locks

Snap Locks are lightweight, compact attachments that connect the brakes to the risers. A small focused magnet inside the catch and an internal locking system hold the handle in place, releasing only if the handles are pulled down towards the pilot. This unique design feature means the handles don’t fall off while kiting, packing, or performing manoeuvres. The Snap Lock system solves many of the problems associated with press-studs and magnets.

Strong shark nose

An ultra aggressive shark nose optimises stability at all speeds. Not all sharks are created equal and BGD’s shark noses are very aggressive, maximising the effects of the technology.

Triple finger diagonals

Triple Finger Diagonals create a more solid and durable wing. Across the whole chord of the profile, three-piece diagonal supports pass through holes in the ribs. They ensure structural integrity by avoiding the cloth being loaded in the bias direction. This is particularly important near the trailing edge where the profile is thin and shallower diagonal ribs supporting high loads.

Weight-optimised ribs

We have maintained the strength and rigidity of the ribs while removing unnecessary material. This means less weight for no increase in cost or reduction in strength of the wing. The hole positioning and size depends on the loads taken locally by the sail, and it is thanks to recent developments in our software that it is now possible to accurately calculate this.

Target

Designed by a world champ for the next champ, the DIVA is for pilots who want the feel of 3-liner while benefitting from the performance of a 2-liner. This is a very high performance wing and is only for highly skilled competition-level pilots.

Designer's notes

Since my son Tyr will be flying in the Worlds, I designed the DIVA to be fast, but with the perfect balance of raw performance and progressive safety. The DIVA is designed to warn experienced pilots of light-to-moderate turbulence rather than completely collapsing.

Bruce’s article in Cross Country magazine, ‘Shifting Our Thinking on Safety’, explains how a wing that is very stable and almost never collapses can lead to more accidents because the pilot has little experience of how to deal with it. Any wing will collapse given enough turbulence. So if a wing is going to collapse, a small collapse in medium turbulence is better than a big collapse in strong turbulence. The nature of the collapse, as well as the amount of turbulence the wing can resist before the collapse, is what make the collapse easier to cope with and the wing safer.
